Wine can be confusing. We’re here to make it easy. Say hello to our team of dedicated wine professionals!

CLIF LOUIS  //  OWNER

My father was stationed in France after the war and he fell in love with French wine. Growing up I was able to taste the great wines my dad served and I, too, fell for French wines! After graduating from the University of Denver I had a couple of different jobs but always wanted to be in the wine business somehow. When I asked Robbie Wilson (founder of The Vineyard in 1971) if he would hire me, he said I could be the stock boy, which allowed me to learn the ropes of the wine business. After a year, he offered to sell me the store and I, of course, said yes. That was 35 years ago. It has been great fun owning The Vineyard and I am thrilled to have such great, knowledgeable, friendly people around to share in the fun! I hope the store will be around for another 47 years!

Grant Harmsen, GM & Wine Buyer

Grant first joined The Vineyard in August 2016 after spending two years in Sonoma wearing many hats at a boutique winery. He got hooked on wine living in Burgundy, and upon his return to the States he began working at a micro-winery in Tacoma, Washington. In Sonoma he worked for a larger winery, where he did everything from picking grapes to designing labels to marketing and social media outreach. Grant completed the Wine & Spirits Education Trust Advanced Course in 2017, followed quickly by the Court of Master Sommeliers Intro Course. Grant headed up the weekly tastings and ran off-site education courses for the City of Stapleton until 2020 when he left The Vineyard to dive back into the boutique winery side of the business. After stints in Boulder and Santa Barbara County, he re-joined The Vineyard in June of 2025 after having successfully completed the Wine & Spirits Education Trust Diploma Course in 2023, replacing Nathan Gordon as GM & Wine Buyer. He is always on the hunt for the obscure, forgotten, well-aged and downright weird wines of the world. When he’s not focusing on wine, Grant’s hobbies include exploring the mountains, playing tennis, cooking and classic cars.

Bret Kindsvatter

Bret has fascinations with dragons, delicious tasting things, and spending quality time with the good people around him. His dad once said, “life is too short to not have good espresso when you want it” and damnit he lives by that. With a degree in Geology, years of professional cooking, and management of a tea house, he learned the intricacies of pairings and importance of quality sourced ingredients, good farming and the relationship grapes have with soil. This all lead up to his realization that wine is much more than just a tasty beverage. However, the big “aha” moment was at the restaurant he served at in Nashville, TN. He got the opportunity to try a sip (mostly the sediment at the end of the bottle) of 1982 Chateau Margaux and to this day he has never been the same, if you catch him gazing off in the distance…..he’s probably thinking of that moment or the 2023 Nuggets Championship run. Though his heart lies in Italian wines that pair perfectly with his mother’s cooking, he strongly believes people should drink more Syrah and Riesling. He spends his days studying wine and over-sharing what he learns that day with his very patient wife while they drink really cool wine and chat about the Jokic’s dominance alongside their pup.

Dave Chew

Dave’s first “Aha!” wine moment was blind-tasting the 1980 Carneros Creek Fay Vineyard Cabernet shortly after its release. (“Yes,” says Dave, “I’m that old.”) Since then he’s enjoyed many Napa Cabs along with all the other usual suspects—Bordeaux, Burgundy, Barolo, Rioja. Lately, all the young wine lovers at The Vineyard have convinced him that white wines can be just as complex and delicious as reds. His major weakness is still Sauternes (all dessert wines, really), and of course there’s still nothing that compares with a great Champagne.

Sharon Newhof

Sharon loves her job as The Vineyard’s Chief Financial Officer, Accountant and all-around Numbers Queen. “The staff is always willing to help me learn more,” she says, “both about wine in general and specifically what I enjoy. Clif is a great boss, and who wouldn’t want to work in the best wine shop in Denver!”
