Raj Parr is one of those people in the wine industry that can hold a room captive with his soft-spoken diatribes on wine and farming. From the restaurant world to being a part of well-known wine projects in California and Oregon and authoring books on wine (everyone should check out A Sommelier’s Atlas to Taste), his true passion these days is farming.
Since cutting ties with his other projects, he has been focusing solely on farming and developing the Phelan Farm, a multi-generational homestead, farm and ranch nestle just a few miles from the Pacific ocean off of scenic Highway 1 just outside of the picturesque seaside town of Cambria. Raj champions minimal intervention in every aspect of the project, from farming to bottling, crafting the wines as purely and sustainably as possible. The combination of one of the brightest minds in wine today, minimal intervention techniques and some ‘out of left field’ varieties is quickly making Phelan Farms one of the most exciting wine projects today.
This two pack showcases two wines from the farm, one white and one red.
The white bottle is his 2024 Phelan Farms Jacquère, a varietal bottling of this eastern French and Swiss specialty. Originally hailing from the Savoie region, this is one of the great winter whites, with a medium-bodied palate of ripe citrus, pears and orchard fruit and saline minerality to liven up the finish. This may be the last vintage Raj bottles the Jacquère on its own rather than in a blend.
Completing the pack is the 2024 Phelan Farms Autrement Rouge, another Savoie-inspired wine but this time a blend of Gamay, Mondeuse and Pinot Noir. Medium-bodied, with brambly fruit and hints of floral-tinged spice are supported by present, but fine-grained and silky tannins with chalky, bright acidity to keep you coming back for more.
