December Selections

2021 Château Musar Levantine de Musar   &   2021 Meyer-Näkel Blanc de Noir Illusion

Château Musar is perched above Lebanon's Mediterranean beaches just north of Beirut. They have been crafting some of the most compelling, unique and long-lived wines in the cellars there since 1930. The grapes are grown in the country's Bekaa Valley, which takes up the majority of the center of the country. This is where the Roman's built their temple to Bacchus, the God of Wine over one thousand years ago. Today, the team at Musar cultivates traditional varieties as well as some international selections. The Levantine bottling takes the Cinsault and Cabernet from the top wine and introduces Tempranillo (55% Cinsault, 35% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon). The wine is fermented and aged in a combination of cement and stainless steel tank, never seeing any oak barrels. This is an approachable entry to Musar and gives a bit of a glimpse of the elegance, depth and drive that the wines have.

Meyer-Näkel is a family owned and operated estate in Germany's Ahr River Valley. Situated north of the famous Mosel Valley, the Ahr is both a smaller region for wine as well as a more narrow, steeper valley. The dark slate soils here benefit viticulture, reflecting the sunshine back onto the vines to aid ripeness in a northerly region. Sisters Meike and Dorte Meyer-Näkel are the current generation to head up the estate and continue to carry on the family tradition of focusing on Pinot Noir, called Spätburgunder in Germany. Here though, they are using Pinot Noir to make a white wine. After the berries are hand picked, they are pressed off the skins before fermentation to avoid releasing the pigments from the crushed skins into the wine. Labeled as a Blanc de Noir but not in reference to a sparkling wine, it ends up having flavors and a body reminiscent of high-quality but flat Blanc de Noir Champagne.
